"Hen-RYYY! Henry Aldrich!!"
"Coming, Mother!"

I love old radio - and some new radio, too, albeit courtesy of BBC Radio 4. Check out www.radioarchive.cc for some wonderful radio programming, including some old Aldrich Family shows. :-)

Wonderful article. I didn't get to listen to the likes of Authur Godfrey, but DID get to be entertained by radio stations that went out of their way to be involved in the community. Not so anymore and it's a shame.

Hey, now you are talking about the radio I grew up with. Allen's Alley: "pretty good Johnny, but taint the way I heerd it. The way I heerd it, one feller says to tother, Sayyyyy, he says." Well, today you did tell it the way I heerd it, and I liked the telling. Yes, and what a contrast with squawk radio. We still listen to the radio every day, but 100% NPR--never have had TV. (I would lack the self control to turn off the junk.)

What trust there must be, a solid bond of friendship to be sure, in order for someone to offer such a stinging critique: the worst ever. And for both of you to move on...that's rare. Even with the balance offered by the seventh in line, with my thin skin I'm prone to suffer over the first comment and nearly overlook the grace of the second one. And pray for a third comment that tilts the scale to sooth my ego. Even if that comes on the following Sunday!

One Sunday after I preached a friend, church member, and retired philosophy professor from the local university came to me in the greeting line and said, thoughtfully, that in all her years of never missing a Sunday, the sermon I had just preached was about the worst she had ever heard. (We remained friends, and she never minced her words.) The seventh person in that sabbath line shook my hand---no, held it---and said that was the best sermon she had ever heard.

I was glad on that day to be reminded that God's Spirit is at work, despite my ruinous preaching!

I've wondered if those of us with weak egos should take John Knox's lead: after worship, he is alleged to have stepped from the pulpit to his locked study and spent the afternoon praying God's forgiveness for what he had just done! That might be a better alternative to standing in line shaking hands . . .

Thanks, Jeff, for the post.
